A kickoff reception for The Plein Air Painters, featuring an exhibit and sale of original paintings of Edgewater scenes. Look for the Plein Air Painters on Andersonville sidewalks painting throughout the weekend. Free.

An evening of performances featuring local band The Diving Bell and Chicago-based dance company Ballet 5:8. The Semeiotic Gallery opens at 6:00pm.

Unity Community Center at Unity Lutheran Church
Explore Unity’s Community Center with a reception for Arts Weekend, as well as the following exhibits/performances:

  • Musical performances by Philip Torre, Baritone (leading roles with Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera and more); Cecilia Pinto, Violinist (MA the Boston Conservatory); and friends – offering a mix of both classical and pop; Constellation Men’s Ensemble, 12 member group, winner of DCASE Artists Grant will share new works.
  • Dance performances by Unity Works Dance Project II, curated by Sarah Gottlieb, and Synapse Arts Collective, showing an excerpt-in-progress from the dance-theater project You’re So Stubborn – a gut-rending performance that examines instincts, relationships, and the elusive concept of trust. Also experience Shed End Well – set in stairwell, this umbral site-specific dance evokes the mystery of passageways, transience, haunts and ascension (choreographed by Sarah Gottlieb, music by Andrew Green). Additionally choreographed by Sarah Gottlieb: Refigure – a collage of imageryand improvised movement and YOLK (excerpt-in-progress, project supported in part by IAP grant from DCASE as well as IAC additional support from Links Hall). Ascension Performing Arts sharing Contemporary, Hip Hop and Kapwa Modern Choreography.
  • A juried show of visual art, featuring all local artists.
  • Performances by Walkabout Theater, excerpts from Moscow, and Underscore Theatre Company, selected songs and scenes from the musical comedy The Guide To Being Single. Unity Players presents Jeanette D. Farr’s social drama Gray Matter, which explores stereotyping, and The Waking Theater presents a short piece from William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure site-specifically in Unity Lutheran Church.

Bad Advice – Four players take your suggestion and spin it into three acts full of memorable characters, madcap situations and unbelievably horrible advice. Tickets $10/$5 for students, or 2 for 1 with an Arts Weekend brochure.

Assemblers 3: Countdown to Assemblers 4 – We live in an age of cinema where a movie’s post-credits scene means more than the movie itself. Featuring all new sketches that attack superheroes, superhero movies and the people who love them. Love, death, sex, violence, codependency and devotion to hype are all part of this action-adventure-comedy spectacle. Tickets $15/$10 for students.

Join 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman to celebrate the unveiling of “Women & Children First Way” in honor of former WCF owners Linda Bubon and Ann Christophersen; and meet-and-greet new owners Lynn Mooney and Sarah Hollenbeck.

Upended Productions’ Alice
An ambulatory, multi-disciplinary theatrical experience. Follows a white rabbit to various location throughout the Andersonville neighborhood. Ducking into storerooms and back patios, through bookstores and taverns and galleries, the audience IS Alice and the Andersonville neighborhood becomes a wonderland. Chapters of the book are divided amongst Chicago fringe theater companies, visual and film artists and performed in the various locations throughout the neighborhood. Performances begin at The Neo-Futurarium, 5153 N. Ashland. Groups leave every 15 minutes until 2pm. Tickets $20/$15 for students. Adventure Library! – Kids jump on stage and help us re-write their favorite books using the power of their imaginations and laughter. This show is laugh out loud funny for any member of the family. Tickets $12/$8 for kids.

Don’t Pass Go! – Inspired by the world’s most popular board game, Don’t Pass Go! explores seven inter-connected characters and where they are in life, aka the game board. Comprised of four different musicals – the audience and cast won’t know which musical they are doing until an audience member rolls the dice. Tickets $20/$15 for students.

Join 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman, the Baxter family and the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce to celebrate and honor Jan Baxter, Andersonville business owner and pioneer for 30 years. An Open House in the Landmark will include refreshments and a toast to Jan’s impact and future!
